Breaking News!   Increased Purchase Allotments: 30g → 60g flower; 500mg → 1,000mg THC infused; 5g → 10g concentrate. | Non-residents: 15g → 30g flower; 250mg → 500mg THC infused; 2.5g → 5g concentrate.

Illinois shoppers now have more flexibility when visiting licensed stores. Under SB 3222, Illinois cannabis possession limits have doubled for both Illinois residents and out-of-state visitors.

That means eligible adult-use shoppers can now purchase and possess more cannabis flower, THC-infused products, and cannabis concentrates under Illinois law.

For customers searching for Illinois cannabis purchase limits, Illinois cannabis possession limits, or how much cannabis can I buy in Illinois, here is what changed.

What Changed Under SB 3222?

SB 3222 doubled the legal possession limits for adult-use customers in Illinois, among many other updates to the Illinois cannabis industry.

The previous limits were set when adult-use sales launched in Illinois. The new limits give shoppers more flexibility and reduce the need for multiple trips.

The updated limits apply to Illinois residents, out-of-state visitors shopping in Illinois, adult-use consumers age 21+, and medical patients where applicable.

New Illinois Cannabis Possession Limits for Residents

For Illinois residents, the legal limits have doubled across all major product categories.

Illinois Resident Limits: Old vs. New

Product Type Old Illinois Limit New Illinois Limit
Cannabis flower 30 grams 60 grams
THC-infused products 500 mg THC 1,000 mg THC
Cannabis concentrate 5 grams 10 grams

Flower: 30 Grams to 60 Grams

Illinois residents can now possess up to 60 grams of cannabis flower.

That is double the previous 30-gram limit and gives shoppers more room to purchase flower, pre-rolls, and other flower-based products in one visit.

Infused Products: 500 mg THC to 1,000 mg THC

The limit for THC-infused products has increased from 500 mg THC to 1,000 mg THC.

This applies to infused products such as edibles, beverages, and other qualifying THC-infused items.

Concentrates: 5 Grams to 10 Grams

Illinois residents can now possess up to 10 grams of cannabis concentrate.

That is double the previous 5-gram limit.

New Illinois Cannabis Possession Limits for Out-of-State Visitors

Out-of-state shoppers also benefit from the new limits.

Previously, non-residents were limited to half of the Illinois resident limits. Under the updated law, those limits have doubled as well.

Out-of-State Visitor Limits: Old vs. New

Product Type Old Out-of-State Limit New Out-of-State Limit
Cannabis flower 15 grams 30 grams
THC-infused products 250 mg THC 500 mg THC
Cannabis concentrate 2.5 grams 5 grams

Flower: 15 Grams to 30 Grams

Out-of-state visitors can now possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower when shopping in Illinois.

Infused Products: 250 mg THC to 500 mg THC

The limit for THC-infused products for out-of-state shoppers has increased from 250 mg THC to 500 mg THC.

Concentrates: 2.5 Grams to 5 Grams

Out-of-state visitors can now possess up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.

Illinois Cannabis Purchase Limits vs. Possession Limits

Many shoppers search for Illinois cannabis purchase limits, but the law is generally discussed in terms of possession limits.

In practical terms, these limits help determine how much a shopper can legally purchase and possess at one time when visiting a licensed Illinois store.

That means the new Illinois cannabis possession limits may allow eligible shoppers to buy more in a single visit than they could before.

What the New Illinois Limits Mean for Shoppers

The new limits are a practical update for Illinois customers.

  • Fewer trips
  • More flexibility
  • Easier planning
  • More convenient shopping
  • Better access for customers traveling longer distances
  • More room to purchase across product categories

Whether you are shopping for flower, pre-rolls, edibles, beverages, vapes, or concentrates, the new limits give eligible customers more flexibility at checkout.

Do the New Illinois Cannabis Limits Apply to Non-Residents?

Yes. The new limits apply to out-of-state visitors as well.

Non-residents still have lower limits than Illinois residents, but those limits have doubled too.

Out-of-state shoppers can now possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, 500 mg THC in infused products, and 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.

Can You Take Cannabis Purchased in Illinois Across State Lines?

No. Cannabis purchased in Illinois must stay in Illinois.

Even if cannabis is legal in another state, it remains illegal to transport cannabis across state lines. Out-of-state visitors should only purchase what they can legally possess and consume while in Illinois.
